It is usually recommended to change amalgam fillings when they need replacing.

Dental Implants FAQ's

How do I clean dental implants?
The dentist will give you detailed advice on how to look after and maintain your dental implant. Cleaning implants are similar to cleaning your natural teeth.
How long do implants last for?
Implants, like natural teeth, will last for as long as you care for them.
If the bone the implant has been placed into is strong and healthy and the implants are maintained well, you can expect them to last for many years. As with other surgical implants (such as a hip replacement) there is no lifetime guarantee.
How long is the implant process?
The time scale of your implant treatment will be discussed with your dentist, as every case is different.
Usually once the implant has been placed, it takes 8-12 weeks for the bone to integrate with the implant, and after this the implant crown can then be restored.
Does having an implant hurt?
A local anaesthetic will be given when placing an implant so you will not feel any pain, although you may feel some discomfort for about a week after the surgery.
Am I suitable for dental implants?
Whether you are suitable for dental implants depends on the condition of the bone in your jaw. This will initially be assessed by the dentist along with your gums and teeth.
If it looks like you may be suitable, we will arrange for a consultation with our implant surgeon.

Dental Crown FAQ's

What are crowns made of?
There are a variety of different materials a crown can be made from, these materials include: porcelain bonded to metal, all porcelain, all ceramic and metal.
How long is the treatment and does it hurt?
For this treatment you will need 2 visits. One visit for the preparation of the tooth and one visit to fit the crown. These appointments are usually 2 weeks apart.
It shouldn’t hurt. You can have a local anaesthetic, which means it will feel no different from having a filling.

Are there any reasons why I may not be able to have a bridge fitted?
You can only have a bridge if you have enough strong adjacent teeth and good bone support to hold the bridge in place. The dentist will advise you on the best treatment options for your mouth.

Denture FAQ's

What are the benefits of a chrome denture over an acrylic?
Chrome dentures are lighter to wear and are much stronger. Chrome dentures give you a more natural chewing experience due to the conduction of heat through the metal.

How long does root canal treatment take to do?
Root canal treatment will take at least 2 appointments. Each appointment time can vary depending on the case. This would be discussed by your dentist.
Does root canal treatment hurt?
No, usually root canal treatment is done under local anaesthetic and would feel no different to having a normal filling done. There may be some tenderness for a day or so after the treatment.
